Nata asked:

I would appreciate your feedback on the insurance that you have for your pet, as well, as how much does it cost you. Thank you!
Please if you tell me that you are in favor of pet insurance, tell me the name of the insurance and the amount you pay. I will really appreciate it.

DO IT! It is the best thing you can do. You’ll save like 80% on vet bills unless something is seriously wrong with your puppy and needs extra care. But for most dogs, the insurance covers everything. And usually it is on a per year basis, and the first year is the most expensive (besides the last years, but you don’t have to worry about that for a LONG LONG time). I have mine through Banfield, and I am so happy! Mine is only 20 bucks a month and was 144 for the start up. If I didn’t have it my bills would be at least 1k by now.

Save your money. Seriously, don’t buy pet insurance, just start a savings account specifically for pet needs.

I looked into insurance. Some wouldn’t cover routine vet care, others wouldn’t cover major illnesses. Many vets won’t accept the insurance, you pay out of pocket then submit to insurance for reimbursement. Most of the time you have to fight to get your reimbursement and even then they only give you a portion of what you paid. You miss paying one month’s premium and they cancel your policy. They considered all of my animals except a 2 year old cat seniors. The price for seniors is astronomical. It was going to cost me over $300 a month to have everyone covered. And then there’s a chance you’ll never use it.

By creating your own Health Savings Account for your pets, you control what the money is spent on. You don’t have to worry about skipping a payment. And it even earns a little interest. If you don’t need it, you don’t lose it. And if you want to use it for pet food or toys you can. I try to put $20 each pay period into the account. Sometimes I put more, sometimes I put less. But it’s there if I need it.

I agree with K9Resqr. Look into the cost per month of the insurance and then put that amount into a separate savings account for your dog. You may want to up the amount you save each month as your dog gets older. From everything I understand about insurance, the premiums get astronomical when a pet gets older. Older pets tend to have the most health issues. Also some policies have riders for breed specific health issues or pre-existing conditions.

My dog was very ill with multiple health issues from age 10 to 11 (when she passed away). She saw many specialists during her last year. One thing I heard many times at the animal hospital from other owners was how useless the insurance was with a critically ill pet. Also, many companies drop coverage once a pet hits a certain age. If they don’t drop the pet due to age, the premiums increase so much that many owners drop the policy due to cost.

Insurance companies rely on more people paying in more than they receive. This is how they make a profit. The ones deemed the “unluckies” are the ones who cost the company money. Realize that at the animal hospital, I was surrounded by the “unluckies”, the dogs and cats with major health issues. The cost of specialized care is very expensive. More diagnostic equipment can be used on animals and allow better and more specialized care. Dogs live longer but it is at a financial cost.

Knowing this, you need to research your companies (I’ve included a link), know the coverage options and limitations. Think what you can afford out of pocket and for monthly premiums. While I prefer the savings account, insurance might be right for you. I do know that you are better off getting the insurance while your dog is young and healthy.
