Mashu asked:

Ok, first off, our dog hasent been eating for about 2 weeks. We originally thought it was the other dogs eating her food, so we brought her into the house to eat, but she didnt. She started losing weight, and energy, almost immediately. My parents tried different things but were unsuccessful. So I intervened, cause its not my dog but I dont want her die. We had BBQ hotdogs tonight, and there was 4 left over. Without anyone knowing, I tested a couple things. I brought out hotdogs, pizza, and a bowl of dog food. She ate the hotdogs and pizza without thinking. But, the dog food she wont even touch. Which I originally suspected cause of the lawsuit that was recently started.

Basically, she looks really bad, hips showing and all that. They were going to put her down tomorrow, but I got her to eat. Now, being half educated, I know that when somethings starving, the last thing you do is feed it a whole bunch. So, how do I bring her back to health?
Shes a full size poodle, and shes 15. Though she acted young, until recently. Do you feed her a little bit 5 times a day, or, medium amount 2 times, or, start off with a little bit frequently and increase. Or what?

Feed her a little bit a few times a day, five times at the most, try adding water to her food or a little bit of broth. She still needs to see a vet there may be some other things causing this. Like cancer or organ failure, it may be her way of dying in peace.

If there is a medical issue for the weight loss, feeding her junk will not help at all.
Unless there is a medical problem, dog’s don’t just stop eating their food to the point of obvious weight loss. There has to be something going on, especially if the dog is 15.
Without medical care, I doubt you are going to be able to bring her back to health because you wouldn’t be addressing the underlying problem.

HM…you can always change the dog food…even put her on a good canned food. If she doesn’t want to eat GOOD dry food.
Go by the weight recommendation on the back of the bag. Do not over feed.
Might want to take her to the Vet if these things don’t work…
Might have Cancer? losing so much weight and not eating is a sign, my dog a couple months ago did the samething….not eating and was done to skin and bones. He would eat a hamburger etc…
But within a week he did have Cancer but died of heat failure.
What you are doing is good, so at least you know you tried everything you could!!
Good luck! hopefully she just lost interest in the food she was given!

You might try a raw diet for her. If her teeth are bad, you can grind the raw meaty bones and she will be able to eat them with no problem. She will like the food and it will be healthy for her. Here’s an instructional site for raw feeding:
Another thing to consider is that this dog is 15 years old and what is going on with her could be something else altogether. A Vet examination would be needed to be sure she doesn’t have something like cancer that is killing her.
I hope not, but she is really old. I am glad you are trying to bring her back to health and a good diet may do that if she doesn’t have something else going on.
If she is in that shape as a reaction to tainted dog food, she would need I.V. treatment to start. A Vet could do that and give her a thorough check up and then you could start a healthy diet she would enjoy and which ingredients you could feel safer about if you pick them out yourself.

Being 15 years old, shes getting on a bit. A vet visit is necessary to ensure there isnt anything else going on. Some dogs get a bit funny and fussy as they reach their twilight years. The best thing to feed an underweight dog is a bit of cooked rice with some chicken broth, several times a day. After a few days, start adding shredded poached chicken. Then you can add vegetable broth, which you can poach the chicken in. Just get a pot of water, throw in some veges like carrot, sweet potato, broccoli, cauliflower, Strain the veges out, but you can keep the veges, frozen, for mashing and adding later. Finally, you can add some beef gravy. By the end of week 2, you should be feeding her, shredded poached chicken, mashed cooked vegetables, rice and beef gravy. At least 3 times a day until she gets to a decent weight, then only twice a day. You can continue feeding her this, as long as you dont mind cooking it. You can make up large batches, get some containers and dish it out into the containers into the right size portion, freeze it, then just microwave defrost it at feeding time. This is what i was recommended for my sick dog. I was also recommended to add a tablespoon of natural, unflavoured yoghurt to one feed a day, once she seemed healthier, just to maintain good digestive health.

You need to find out why she’s not eating. I’m not sure what you mean about the dog not touching the food because of the lawsuit that was recently started. Not all dog foods were contaminated or recalled–was your dog food one of the ones that was? For sure, your dog has no way of knowing–the food did not smell or taste any different. There’s something else going on, and your parents need to take the dog to the vet to find out what. Why would anyone let a dog starve to death without taking it to the vet?

If you feed a starving dog too much food, or food that is too rich, such as hot dog, you can cause severe abdominal cramps and diarrhea and actually cause the dog to dehydrate and die. Start feeding her simple, bland foods like boiled chicken and rice, easy on the chicken, heavy on the rice, in small amounts about 4 times a day. Increase the amount you’re feeding slowly as the dog’s appetite increases, and decrease the number of feedings as the dog gains weight.

Please try to convince your parents to let the vet check the dog and see what’s wrong. Good luck with her.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but You dog is could be really really sick. Especially if she’s 15. My labroador had this same problem now that you mention it. She would not eat anything at all. We thought she was being a picky eater. Finally we we found some wet food that she liked. But then that summer we she started losing weight. We thought it was the heat. Then in the fall she started throwing up all over the place, every 5 hours, every day. We took her to the vet and found out she had renal failure. It was too late to save her. If you’re dog is really sick and you don’t have the money for surgery…
Well, the dog is 15. I am sure she has had a happy life. I would start feeding it a little bit at a time, and gradually add more and more. But you might need some pills from a vet. If I were you, I wouldn’t trust anyone’s opinion here except for a vet. So the best thing to do would be to take it to the vet.

The first thing you do to bring the dog back to health is take her to a vet and get her checked out. At her age, there may be a problem with her teeth that she can’t chew dry dog food or she may be suffering from cancer or kidney failure. Also, dogs are notorious for wanting to eat table food instead of dog food. The fact that she is so emaciated leads me to believe that she has a medical problem that needs immediate attention.

You are correct not to gorge the dog with food. Give her about 1/2 of a 13.5 ounce can of dog food morning, noon, and night for medium-large size dogs. If she doesn’t eat it that often, try giving it to her morning and night. She’ll be fine with that amount to begin with. Buy the CUTS of dog food and not the kind that is one big clump of ground up food. I use ALPO Cuts (the kind that is in little squares). My dog won’t eat it with the “gravy” or sauce on it so I wash it off. Try warming it in the microwave for a few seconds and be sure it’s warm but not too warm. If she’s going to eat dog food, she’ll eat it prepared that way.

You sound like a kind and caring person and I wish you great success.
