They treat animals, no matter how big, small or exotic to try and keep them well, but just what does becoming a vet involve?

It can take just as long to become a veterinary surgeon as it can to become a doctor, as after school you need to attend four years of college and then four years of veterinary school to begin with. Getting a placement at an animal hospital can help with credit, but it wont make your time any shorter actually in college. Competiton will be tough to get into a veterinary college, as there are only 28.

You will learn about the different illnesses and also the numerous amounts of different animal species you may have to treat. People who want to become doctors have to familarise themselves with the human structures, but a vet will have quite a few speices to learn in order to become a vet. Bare in mind you may want to concentrate on a certain species of animals to. The same as the bar exam taken by lawyers, the final college exam, if failed wont let you work for a veterinary practice or treat sick animals. Think carefully over which state to do the state exam in, as many of them wont give you the right to practice in the other states.

Vets also have to keep their skills up to date in the latest treatments and diseases, which will mean studying in your own time. As a new vet you will also be required to take a veterinary oath, vowing to help animals. The hours can be long, and the hardest thing to do when being a vet is putting an animal ‘to sleep’ when you cant help them, as sometimes the vets can get attached to the ‘patients’ -more so than a human doctor. Remember that, because you may find it hard to cope with.

So if becoming a vet sounds like something you could throw yourself into, then go for it – the fluffy kittens and puppies need you.
